*I am not teaching Writing 1 this semester. When I do, my current students can visit the page for information about the course and course outline.*
This is an undergraduate course offered at KMUTNB, which can be taken by students who have passed English 1 and English 2–the university’s first two required English courses. It is basically a multiple-draft paragraph-level writing course, but the writing practice in class involves some sentence-level writing, and many students who are more familiar with writing in English are allowed to venture into the essay level if they wish to do so.

Course objectives: After taking this course, students should be able to:
- Write outlines, sentences, and paragraphs on subjects of general interest.
- Understand and execute the writing process.
Course description: Writing sentences of various structures, outlines, and short paragraphs. Selection of appropriate words/vocabulary for specific contexts and logical/chronological order. Paragraphs with topic and supporting sentences. A variety of paragraph types, e.g., narrative, inductive, deductive, and expository.
Course methodology:
- short lectures
- in-class exercises with correct answers (can also be homework)
- in-class writing assignments
- personal journal writing (at home)
- external writing assignments (4)
Course materials:
- Textbook: First Steps in Academic Writing, Second Edition, by Ann Hogue, Longman 2008. Students are required to purchase the course materials from the lecturer on the first day of class. The price is 200 baht. Photocopying and previously used books are not permitted.
- Personal Journal: Each student must maintain a personal journal.
- Writing Tools: In addition to the textbook mentioned above, students must bring pens (or pencils), an eraser/correction fluid, writing papers, and a dictionary to class.
Self-Assess Learning Center: SALC is located at the North Bangkok campus in the Nawamintrarajini Building, 10th floor, room 1014.
